Water Village - Brunei Darussalam

A journey along the Brunei River will be the perfext experience into the country's past. It houses the largest water village in the world where it is cosidered as the 'Venice of the East' by European tourists. Kampong Ayer has about 42 villages with a population of more than 30,000 who live in traditionally made stilt houses that are connected by a maze of wooden walkways.
Apart from the traditional structures, visitors also can find a small number of villagers carrying out olden-day activities such as fishing and boat making.

Although the world is evolving quickly due to the technological advances and globalisation, the water village still preserves much of the historical features first witnessed by the graet explorer Ferdinant Magellan in the 16th Century.

You can access the water village by riding on the water taxis which transport you to and from the shore during the day. These water taxis can be called from numerous docking ports along the riverbanks of the Brunei River.
